I'm cheap frugal.
I will do almost anything to avoid paying full price for anything.
And after seeing Becky of Infarrantly Creative's tutorial for a paper bag pinata, there's no way I was spending $15+ on one (that didn't match the rainbow theme, no less)!
Here's how mine came together.
I must give credit to Dana of MADE, because she showed me the magic that happens to crepe paper streamers when you feed them through your sewing machine!
Now that you have ruffled your streamers, let's build!
I used a paper sack that had a handle on top so I could hang the pinata (from the swingset!). It wasn't part of the plan, but as it turns out, the stripes on the DSW sack were very helpful in keeping my layers straight. Bonus!
Plug in your hot glue gun.
Start at the bottom (not on the top, like I did in the pic below -- oops!).
Start at the bottom (not on the top, like I did in the pic below -- oops!).
You could leave it as is, or if you have extra ruffles, glue them to the bottom for added color!
Easily hung from the rings on the swing set and ready for a good smashing! It made for a pretty sturdy pinata, given all the thread and hot glue. I recommend candy that can't be pulverized...a pretty shower of Smarties powder sprinkled out of the pinata as it was whacked!

Jamie, this is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you posted this as I'd like to make one for my daughters upcoming birthday this month. She will be 14, but she loves anything rainbow and she can relive her younger years :)
That is such a great idea! I love pinatas and making your own is even better. I would love for you to link it up to my link party. I know my readers would love it too!

This is awesome--I'm definitely going to refer to this when my son's second birthday rolls around! :D
ReplyDeleteI think with the money you save on the pinata you deserve the cute flats. :) Love this! And it's great for younger kids who wouldn't be able to really break a regular pinata anyway, but still want to be able to "smash" something. I will be remembering this this summer as I have a certain party on the brain that this would be perfect for.
ReplyDeleteAlso, LOVE the ruffled streamers. :)
That is such a good idea to make it out of a paper bag. The ones you buy form the store are so hard to break open my husband has to come in at the end and get thing moving so the kids can get the candy. I love your blog, I'm now following you. I would like to invite you to come and visit me @ http://www.arosiesweethome.com/
ReplyDeleteI have a Sunday party that is still open if you want to share anything. I would love it if you did.
Thanks
Rose
very nice!
ReplyDeleteThis is SUPER cute- love it! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThat is an absolutely beautiful pinata. I would be kind of sad to see it destroyed. I never knew you could make ruffly crepe paper. So awesome.
ReplyDeleteWish I saw this before I hosted our rainbow party a couple weeks ago. It's adorable, and the kids might actually be able to break it to get the candy. We had to let an adult at ours to make it break. Great work.
ReplyDeleteIt looks fantastic!! And who doesn't like a project that involves a cute new pair of shoes? Thanks so much for sharing at The Creative Spark. Happy Easter!
ReplyDeleteJenn :)
I love this - it is soooo much cuter than the ones you buy!!! I also love that you showed your "oops" moment when first starting to sew on the ruffles, it helps to know that others make mistakes too :) Your blog is great!

cute pinata, but the disclaimer at the end KILLED ME!!! I actually laughed out loud! So glad to have found your blog in time for my daughter's birthday. I LOVE an easy project. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking it would use less crepe paper if you just hand ruffed the edges and clued it to the bag. I am assiming they still hand ruffle crepe paper since I did it the first time probably 60-65 years ago. Love your pinata looks professional. Take care.
ReplyDeleteReally simple and so cute!
ReplyDeleteLooking for party ideas this evening for my son's party and I've just stumbled on your home made pinata. I made one for my daughter's party last week out of an old paper lightshade...with pull cords to open a flap at the bottom rather than encouraging 3 year olds beating the beegeebers out of something ;o) Anyway, it worked well, looked beautiful, matched my theme ;) and was cheap (frugal)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea about sewing the crepe streamers...will definitely be using that tip for future pinatas!
